One of the first things I did as soon as I got my first essential oil kit was throw out my Windex and make a toxin-free, chemical-free glass & surface cleaner myself.
I knew this was a priority for me because according to research by the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), the air inside our homes has been found to be 5x’s more polluted than the air outside our homes. Isn’t that mind-boggling?! Who would’ve thought! But it makes sense because if you read the back of any of your cleaning products, you’ll see that so many of them have such poisonous toxins that are noxious for you & your family’s health. All the more reason to make these natural glass & surface cleaners at home yourself!
Not only is it safer to make your own cleaning solutions, it’s also cheaper in the long run, more effective, and my recipe in particular is multi-purpose. I use this same homemade natural cleaner to wash my fruits & vegetables. Take THAT Windex!
Why did I choose Lemon, Grapefruit, & Rosemary essential oil as the blend? Great question!
All citrus oils are both cleansing to the environment and uplifting to mood. Citrus oils are powerful cleansers that help to break down grease, grime, and oily residue. Rosemary is both cleansing and disinfecting. It’s an excellent germ killer and can be used to support a healthy immune system. The 3 oils together smell fresh, bright, and uplifting!
Here are some more fun facts about each of the oil (if you’re into the science of it all like I am):
The Lemon essential oil is what makes this green clean solution effective as a cleansing agent that purifies the air and surfaces. It can be used aromatically, topically, & internally. Taken internally, Lemon provides cleansing and digestive benefits and supports healthy respiratory function.* When diffused, Lemon is very uplifting and energizing and has been shown to help improve mood. Just make sure to avoid sunlight or UV rays for up to 12 hours after topical application and keep out of reach of children. Test a small sample first to make sure your skin is not overly sensitive to it. Diluting with fractionated coconut oil can help soothe sensitivity.
Grapefruit essential oil can provide an uplifting environment due to its invigorating and energizing aroma, while acting as a purifying agent when added to a skin care routine. doTERRA’s, in particular, (which is the highest quality EO out there & I’ve tried TONS over the years) can be used aromatically, topically, internally, & without dilution. Just be sure to avoid sunlight or UV rays for up to 12 hours after applying the product. Also, like with anything, test a small sample first to make sure your skin is not overly sensitive to it.
Rosemary essential oil, aside from its culinary uses, is frequently used in aromatherapy for its energizing scent. Taken internally, it helps to reduce nervous tension & occasional fatigue. It can be used aromatically, topically, internally, & without dilution. Just keep out of reach of children & avoid contact with eyes, inner ears, & sensitive areas.
