“Geranium is the oil of love and trust. It helps to aid in healing a broken heart. It restores confidence in the innate goodness of others and the world.” This quote comes from the
Essential Emotions: 10th Edition Book. All essential oils have both physical and emotional properties. This book is great for breaking down the emotional properties of each essential oil.
As you read through this article keep in mind that floral essential oils support healthy hormones, soothe skin, support hair health, and have emotional healing properties.
In a previous article of mine,
Co-Impact Sourcing with doTERRA | What Makes doTERRA Essential Oils Different, I share the impact doTERRA had on the communities where each essential oil is sourced. doTERRA has a goal of positively tripling their impact by 2030. There are ten oils specifically that have the largest impact on the growers, distillers, and communities from which they are sourced – Geranium is one of those ten oils. In this article I will be sharing the uses, benefits, DIY ideas, and how you can help make a positive impact right from your home by purchasing Geranium essential oil.
About Geranium
Geranium essential oil might be known as the “poor man’s rose,” but it has a different aroma than rose. The aroma of this oil is sweet, floral, and powerful – a little goes a long way, so when you are using it in recipes start by adding just one drop at a time.
A member of the Pelargonium genus of flower species, geraniums are grown for their beauty and as a staple of the perfume industry. While there are over 200 different varieties of Pelargonium flowers, only a few are used as essential oils. Uses of Geranium essential oil date back to ancient Egypt when Egyptians used Geranium oil to beautify skin and for other benefits. In the Victorian era, fresh geranium leaves were placed at formal dining tables as decorative pieces and to be consumed as a fresh sprig if desired; in fact, the edible leaves and flowers of the plant are often used in desserts, cakes, jellies, and teas. As an essential oil, Geranium has been used to promote the appearance of clear skin and healthy hair—making it ideal for skin and hair care products. It also helps calm nerves and lessen feelings of stress. Geranium is also known to naturally repel insects.
My Experience with Geranium
As mentioned above Geranium helps to aid in healing a broken heart. I found Geranium at a time in my life when I was going through a volatile break up with a significant other. During this time, I was experiencing unbalanced hormones and skin issues. I didn’t know why at the time, but I was drawn to Geranium and could not get enough of it. I enjoyed the way the aroma made me feel and I was also using it on face for the breakouts I was experiencing. I was adding a drop of Geranium and Tea Tree essential oils to my cleanser. I repeated the same process for adding these oils to my moisturizer. Geranium was really a powerhouse in supporting me hormonally, emotionally, and physically. It wasn’t until years later when I learned about the emotional properties of Geranium that I realized how much Geranium had supported my emotional needs at the time.

Geranium can be used in your garden to repel insects. If you want to learn more about organic gardening using essential oils read my article,
Organic Gardening Tips with Essential Oils. TerraShield is doTERRA's Repellent Blend - of course it contains Geranium. Other ingredients in this blend include: Citronella, Lemongrass, Thyme, Cedarwood, and Peppermint essential oils in a base of Sesame Seed Oil. This is great to use in place of other toxic insect repellents.

DIY Ideas Using Geranium
Make this whipped body butter to use on your skin after a shower. It will leave you skin looking and feeling amazing.
Make a sugar scrub with Geranium and add a little Lavender or Vanilla for an intoxicating aroma.
In the late stages of my pregnancy I took a bath everyday using this combination. After my daughter was born I would still use this combination while I nursed her in the bath. My midwife taught me that baths are a good way to get your milk flowing and so this was our routine. This is still one of my daughters favorite combinations to add to her baths.
Geranium supports hair health, so I recommend making a hair mask using Geranium and Rosemary for healthy, vibrant hair. You can also use the recipe below.
Make a Face Serum
Add Geranium to Your Toner

This is one of my most requested recipes. This salve is specifically for soothing skin and easing muscle tension. If you are wanting to use this salve to target particularly irritated skin, I would swap out the essential oils in the recipe for Geranium, Tea Tree, Frankincense, Lavender, and Cedarwood.
Clary Calm for Hormone Balance
As I have mentioned, floral oils are really good for hormonal health. For hormonal support I now use Clary Calm, which has Geranium in it. Clary Calm is known as the monthly blend for women. I have used this oil for almost nine years. I used to have awful cramps, get moody, and have breakouts around my time of the month before I started using Clary Calm. I use this blend every single day, I roll on my armpits before applying deodorant. If you don't want to put it on your underarms, you can use it on your abdomen, forearm, or the inside of your ankle.
Diffuser Blends Using Geranium
I absolutely love Geranium mixed with other oils, such as Lavender, Wild Orange, Vanilla, Citrus Bliss, Frankincense, and many others. Check out all the diffuser blend recipes below.

2021 Sourcing Impact:
People empowered with sourcing jobs:
- Madagascar: 6,392 farmers, 187 permanent jobs
- Kenya: 1,062 farmers
Why Madagascar and Kenya?
Small scale farmers in Madagascar and Kenya have been growing Geranium for decades. Geranium needs a specific climate to grow in, the flowering plant requires little water, but it also does not do well in climates that are overly dry. In Kenya the plant grows on the slope of Mount Kenya. In Madagascar, Geranium is grown in the central highlands where the weather is temperate and consistent.
The Harvesting and Distillation Process
The Geranium plant must be distilled right before or just as it begins to flower to have the highest quality yield. The leaves, stalks, and flowers of the Geranium plant are steam-distilled to produce Geranium essential oil. During harvesting only part of the plant is cut away, while some of the leaves remain to help the plant regrow. Geranium must also be distilled within hours of harvesting to maintain its aromatic and beautifying benefits.
In Kenya, doTERRA's Co-Impact Sourcing initiatives for Geranium include training smallholder farmers, providing critically important initial inputs, and supporting cooperatives. doTERRA also continues to monitor and evaluate their initiative through a third-party program with the University of Oxford.
Initiatives in both countries include contracts with fair and transparent pricing, providing smallholder farmers with a stable, predictable source of income.

Projects in Kenya include:
- The construction of additional classroom and restroom facilities at Kiwegu Primary School.
- The construction of a school library, water storage, staff room, restrooms, and teacher living quarters at Mwamose Primary school, as well as providing scholarship support.
- The construction of Mwena River Bridge, which allows the community and school children to cross the local river.
- The construction of Majengo Mapya Kindergarten school.
- The construction of a community center.
- Indigenous culture and health trainings for 2,000 school children.
- Colobus Conservation, which provides education about and helps with the reforestation of indigenous trees.
- Mwamose Water Point—a community borehole and water tower
- The Water Maintenance Trust Fund, which does ongoing research and maintenance on community water sources.
Just in 2021, these communities were supported by the following programs and initiatives:
- Days for Girls Kits were given to 250 girls in Mount Kenya.
- 12 students were supported with scholarships. These scholarships paid for tuition and school expenses in secondary schools
In Madagascar, these projects include the establishment of a mobile health clinic. Health officers are chosen from villages and provided with first aid kits and essential oils, and then they’re trained in respective and appropriate uses. A doctor will be employed to work for the clinic and see patients in their homes.
