Lemongrass supports healthy digestion and cellular health, soothes soft tissue discomfort, and is cleansing. Lemongrass is a tall, perennial plant, with a subtle citrus flavor and is used in Asian cuisine in soups, teas, and curries as well as with fish, poultry, beef, and seafood. In addition to its unique flavor, Lemongrass essential oil promotes healthy digestion and acts as an overall tonic to the body’s systems. It’s also purifying and toning to the skin and is frequently used in skin care products for these benefits. Lemongrass can soothe sore muscles and joints, making it an ideal oil to use in massage therapy or applied directly to problem areas. Lemongrass has a pungent, herbaceous aroma that can heighten awareness and promote a positive outlook.
Lemongrass is the oil of cleansing. “It is a powerful cleanser of energy, dispels feeling of despondency, despair, and lethargy. It assists individuals in a healing mode or a cleansing state. It can easily help us let go of old and limiting beliefs, toxic energy, and negativity.” (This quote comes from the

In a previous article of mine,
Co-Impact Sourcing with doTERRA | What Makes doTERRA Essential Oils Different, I share the impact doTERRA had on the communities where each essential oil is sourced. doTERRA has a goal of positively tripling their impact by 2030. There are ten oils specifically that have the largest impact on the growers, distillers, and communities from which they are sourced – Lemongrass is one of those ten oils. In this article I will be sharing the uses, benefits, DIY ideas, and how you can help make a positive impact right from your home by purchasing Lemongrass essential oil.

One of my favorite ways to use Lemongrass is by applying it to the back of the neck. Lemongrass is a hot oil – meaning you always want to dilute it with your favorite carrier oil. I like to use Lemongrass in combination with Deep Blue or Copaiba.
You can also use Lemongrass to support healthy cholesterol levels. Add a couple drops to a capsule and take it a few times a day, as needed, or even long term. doTERRA sells empty veggies capsules that you can use to make your own Lemongrass capsules.
Lemongrass also helps to digest lactose. My husband is lactose intolerant and tries to avoid lactose, but whenever he is exposed, he will double up on Terrazyme and take a veggie capsule of Lemongrass. This seems to help him, but it is not something I recommend doing all the time. Terrazyme is a digestive enzyme and is great for digestion, check out my article,

Another great component of Lemongrass is it helps to support your urinary tract. If your urinary tract is needing a little extra support, try making a capsule with Lemongrass and Juniper Berry essential oils. Juniper Berry is great for supporting kidney and bladder function. Lemongrass decongests the urinary tract and fights infection. If you do not want to take these essential oils internally you can also use them topically. Read,

DDR Prime is another great supplement that contains Lemongrass essential oil. DDR Prime is a blend of oils that have been shown in studies to promote a healthy response to free radicals while supporting healthy cellular function. They protect the body from oxidative stress and can help support apoptosis. Apoptosis is a form of programmed cell death. Which means killing off the cells that contain potentially dangerous mutations and lead to serious health issues. If you want to learn more about the benefits of DDR Prime check out my article,

Why India?
The climate in India is ideal for growing Lemongrass since it requires little groundwater. By sourcing Lemongrass from India doTERRA is able to support small-scale farmers there.
Watch the video below to meet Rukin. She became the sole provider for her family after her husband died. She can send her sons to school and provide for her family by harvesting Lemongrass. You will also learn more about how partnering with farmers has changed lives.
The Harvesting Process
Lemongrass is a perennial grass and is typically harvested four times per year. The grass is cut to the ground and then left to dry in the field before being collected the next day. Lemongrass is cut by hand using sickles. The grass is tied into bundles once collected and driven to a distillation facility by oxcart. After the Lemongrass is steam distilled, the leftovers are used to fuel the distillation.
doTERRA’s Lemongrass farmers have an average of 3 acres making them small scale farmers. Some farmers still harvest other crops like wheat, potatoes, and rice, but the high value of Lemongrass allows them to make more money without increasing the amount of land they work.
People Empowered: Building Supplier Capacity
In India, doTERRA is working with Farms and Farmers—an NGO that helps smallholder farmers to improve their livelihood by increasing their income from agricultural activities. Among their numerous projects across India, they are working with smallholder farmers to introduce high-value crops (particularly Lemongrass) to their land. This is done by suppling seedlings, setting up nurseries, facilitating trainings, and providing farmers with market opportunities, especially for new crops they introduce.
doTERRA’s partnership with Farms and Farmers is helping smallholder farmers in India increase their income through expanded capacity, improved farming techniques, increased yields, improved efficiencies, and strengthened productivity. With the added income from working with a value-add crop like Lemongrass instead of, or in addition to, traditional crops, farmers can earn an income that raises them out of extreme poverty.
Communities Served
doTERRA has also supported the communities of Lemongrass farmers by:
- Providing school bathrooms for girls
- Providing women’s health training kits for 500 girls through the Day for Girls organization
