Tea Tree essential oil is an astringent oil that supports a healthy immune system, clear skin, and is an excellent cleanser in your DIY cleaning products. It is derived from the steam distillation of the tea tree plant, this essential oil boasts a rich history of hundreds of years, revered for its remarkable properties Tea Tree is an herbaceous oil with a clean and fresh aroma. It is an oil that is great for all things cleansing. Tea Tree is included in almost all the essential oil kits that doTERRA offers, because this is just one of those must have on hand oils to use whenever you need it.
Tea Tree essential oil, which is also known as Melaleuca, has been cherished for centuries by cultures across the world for its soothing effect on the skin and profound ability to promote clear breathing and healthy skin function. When added to your daily skincare routine, Tea Tree can serve as a powerful instrument for rejuvenating the skin and soothing uncomfortable irritations. In this article I will be sharing the top 10 uses of tea tree essential oil.
1. Clear Skin
Whether it's night or day, tea tree oil is great for purifying and clarifying your skin. Simply blend one pump of your favorite cleanser with a drop of tea tree oil. Gently massage it into your face, using a warm cloth to open up your pores. The sensation is akin to a luxurious facial, leaving your skin feeling refreshed and clean. It also does not dry your skin out.
Tea tree oil can also be used as a spot treatment to target those pesky blemishes. doTERRA offers Tea Tree Touch, which just means that the tea tree oil is pre-diluted with fractionated coconut oil. Tea Tree Touch would be great to use as a spot treatment.
Alternatively, the HD Clear blend from doTERRA, featuring tea tree oil, is designed specifically for clear skin. I use this gem morning and night, applying it all over my face to combat any acne issues – it's a game-changer!
2. Respiratory Support
When it comes to respiratory support and sinus relief, tea tree oil works wonders! One of my favorite remedies for clearing clogged sinuses is creating a Sinus Steamer. Just pour some hot water into a cup, ensuring it's not scalding hot (we definitely want to keep our faces intact). Now, add one drop each of tea tree, peppermint, lemon, and oregano. Place your face above the cup and inhale the steam. This works amazingly at clearing nasal passages.
Oh, and a quick heads up for my fellow contact lens wearers – you might want to remove them before diving into this steam session.
As for the little ones, I'd suggest keeping them at a distance, as the steam's potency might be a bit overwhelming for their tiny noses. I also recommend altering the recipe for little ones as well – only use tea tree and lemon for littles.
3. Healthy Feet and Nails
If you've ever picked up anything unsavory while walking barefoot at the gym or had an unfortunate encounter during a pedicure, tea tree oil comes to the rescue with its miraculous cleansing properties.
A great way to rid yourself of the foot funk is to soak your feet in footbath with Tea Tree oil. Create your little oasis by adding a few drops of tea tree oil to a warm basin of water, add some Epsom salts to elevate the experience. Sit back and enjoy while Tea Tree oil works its magic. If you're craving an extra burst of invigoration, add a touch of peppermint oil to your foot bath.
For a more prolonged treatment, prepare a roller bottle with this oil. Roll it onto your palms, and massage it into your feet every night. This simple, yet effective ritual will keep your feet and nails clear, healthy, and happy.
4. Soothes Irritated Skin
We like to use Tea Tree oil on any bumps, bruises, and owies. I make an owie spray that we keep on hand in my house. You can find the recipe below.

Tea Tree is great for purifying the air in your home or office. Throw some Tea Tree oil in your diffuser and add a citrus oil of your choice to give your space that bright, clean, crisp aroma. The blend of tea tree and citrus is a symphony of scents, working in harmony to create an aura of freshness that captivates the senses.
Infused with tea tree and other citrus oils, Purify essential oil is my secret weapon on cleaning days. Before I start cleaning, I liked to diffuse Purify throughout my home. This helps to clear my home of any funk and purifies the air as I clean. The power of tea tree and its citrus companions goes beyond just freshening the air; it uplifts the spirit and transforms your living space into a sanctuary of purity.
10. Repel Pests for Healthy Hair
This just happens to be the perfect timing to share this tip with you, as we are about to send the kiddos back to school. Back to school means our kids are sharing everything and spending a lot of time around other kids. Tea Tree essential oil can help keep those dreaded little hair critters from coming home with your kiddos.
Back when I was little, those little critters had managed to find their way into my long, flowing hair. My mom took me to a hairstylist, who cut my hair off to about ear-length. It was traumatizing to say the least.
Since then, I've become quite serious about protecting my daughter and myself from similar hair woes. We've concocted our very own back-to-school Spritz – a secret weapon that keeps those critters at bay. It's our little ritual to ensure that school days are free from hair-related worries.
*If you want to make more at a time the recipe below is double the size of the one above.
DIY Hair Repellent Spray
- 20 drops of Tea Tree
- 20 drops of Rosemary
- 20 drops of Lavender or Peppermint
- Witch hazel and water
- Mix all ingredients together in a 4 oz glass spray bottle, fill ½ with Witch Hazel, and ½ with water (can use all water if you prefer). Shake and spray on hair every morning.
Every morning before school, my daughter and I spritz this on our hair and then gently comb it through. We no longer fret about hair ties borrowed from friends.
I hope you find these tips useful, and Tea Tree essential oil becomes one of your new favorite essential oils.
