It’s that time of year again—back-to-school season is here! I’m excited to share some of my favorite tips and products to help keep your children healthy and focused, not just for the first few weeks, but all year long. We’ll be talking about immune-supporting oils, calming blends for anxious feelings, oils for a restful night’s sleep, and even supplements to give your kiddos the brainpower boost they need for study time.
1. Immune Support: Starting the Day Right
One of the simplest ways to help protect your child’s immune system as they head back to school is with a daily application of essential oils. My daughter and I have made it a habit of using dōTERRA’s Stronger oil from the kids' line or the On Guard blend. We keep these oils right by her toothbrush, so each morning she just rolls a drop on the bottoms of her feet before slipping on her socks. It's quick, easy, and most importantly, effective!
Both Stronger and On Guard are scientifically formulated to support the immune system, making this a powerful addition to your daily routine. You can also support your family’s immune health by diffusing essential oils in your home. We’re an "ABD" family—Always Be Diffusing!
I love using On Guard in the fall because its cinnamon, eucalyptus, wild orange, and rosemary blend gives off a warm, spicy aroma that smells like autumn. But you don’t have to stop there—other oils like Purify, Citrus Bliss, or the Abode blend can also work wonders to cleanse the air and keep the family healthy.
2. Morning Pick-Me-Up: Energize Your Day
Need a little extra energy in the mornings? One of my favorite diffuser blends for those sluggish mornings is wild orange and peppermint. The citrusy freshness of wild orange wakes up the right side of the brain, while peppermint energizes the left side. It’s like a natural cup of coffee! If you’re on the go, you can also apply this blend topically—just rub a couple of drops together in your palms and breathe it in deeply. Trust me, it’s a total game-changer for those busy mornings when you need to get everyone up and ready for the day.
3. Focus During Study Time
As the school year picks up, keeping your child focused and alert during study time is key. Enter rosemary oil! Rosemary has been shown in studies to enhance memory recall, which can be super helpful for those all-important tests and homework assignments. If rosemary isn’t your favorite scent, try mixing it with peppermint or lemon—a combo that sharpens the mind while keeping the atmosphere fresh and vibrant.
For those who need a bit more focus, the InTune blend is a fantastic option. Specifically formulated to promote concentration, InTune is perfect for those who struggle to stay on task. Apply it to the back of the neck at the sub-occipital triangle (the soft spot where the skull meets the neck) to help calm the nervous system and bring attention back to the task at hand.
4. Calming Anxious Feelings
Whether it’s a big test or just the day-to-day stress of school, kids can sometimes experience anxious feelings. To help them stay calm, I recommend two amazing oils: Balance and Adaptive.
Balance is a grounding oil that smells earthy and comforting—like a peaceful walk through the woods. It’s perfect for kids (and parents) who need to feel more centered during times of stress.
Adaptive has a brighter, more floral aroma, featuring wild orange, lavender, and spearmint. It’s designed to help you "adapt" to life’s stresses and changes. Both of these oils are available as pre-diluted roll-ons, making them safe and easy to apply on pulse points or behind the ears.
For extra confidence-boosting, especially for kids who might feel nervous in new situations, the Brave blend from the kids' line is perfect. It has a fun, citrusy aroma and helps give them a little extra courage when they need it most.
5. Sleep Support for Restful Nights
If you’ve got a little one who struggles to wind down before bed, essential oils like Serenity are a dream come true—literally! Serenity is dōTERRA’s restful blend and has been shown to promote deeper, more restful sleep. You can diffuse it in their bedroom or apply it to the bottoms of their feet before bed. If you’re looking for an extra treat, try the Serenity Sleep Stick. It’s made with a nourishing shea butter base and is great for rubbing on feet or the back for a calming bedtime routine.
6. Soothe Upset Tummies
From nervous butterflies to food that doesn’t sit right, upset stomachs happen. When they do, I reach for DigestZen. This digestive blend works wonders, though it does have a bit of a licorice-like scent thanks to the fennel. If your child isn’t a fan of fennel, try Tamer from the kids' line. Tamer has a gentler aroma and is just as effective. Both blends are perfect for rubbing on the tummy during car rides or anytime your little one needs digestive support.
7. Boost Whole Body Nutrition
Supporting the immune system isn’t just about oils—it’s about overall nutrition. That’s where dōTERRA’s supplements come in. My daughter loves the A2Z Multivitamin Chewables, and we pair those with the IQ Mega fish oil for brain health. The fish oil is orange-flavored and packed with Omega-3s, and if your child isn’t a fan of the taste, you can easily mix it into a smoothie.
For gut health, we use PB Assist Jr., a probiotic that tastes like a sweet pixie stick—except it’s good for you! It’s a must-have for keeping the gut happy, which is crucial for everything from immune support to mental clarity.
There you have it, my top picks for back-to-school wellness! Whether it’s immune support, focus, calm, or sleep, these essential oils and supplements are a natural, easy way to support your family through the school year.
