Top Essential Oils to Support a Healthy Respiratory System | Winter Wellness Tips with doTERRA

I’ve noticed people around me are experiencing throat irritation and congestion that seem to persist longer than usual, so I thought it would be the perfect time to share my tips that I’ve been using for the last decade to support a healthy respiratory system.

From immediate actions you can take today to long-term considerations for future health, let's explore ways to holistically support a healthy respiratory system and discover the healing potential of nature's remedies.

Breathe

Respiratory health is a cornerstone of overall well-being, but it is often challenged by seasonal irritants and environmental factors. Breathe Essential Oil is the most popular doTERRA essential oil for supporting respiratory health. This blend is revered for its invigorating minty aroma, enriched with subtle notes of Cardamom, Eucalyptus, and Tea Tree. Notably, it also contains Laurel Leaf essential oil, a botanical native to the Mediterranean. One of the main chemical constituents of Laurel Leaf is eucalyptol, imparting an herbal, minty freshness that complements the blend's respiratory-supportive properties. Eucalyptus, with its diverse range of over 700 species, contributes unique therapeutic benefits. The blend also contains Ravintsara essential oil. Breathe stands as a powerful aid in promoting clear breathing and comfort in the respiratory system.

I like to put Breathe oil on my chest before working out, which helps give me a boost of energy and supports clear and open airways. One of the easiest ways to use Breathe when you are experiencing throat irritation or congestion is to put Breathe oil in your diffuser and diffuse throughout your home. At night, I recommend adding Lavender and Breathe to your diffuser. Lavender is calming and will help you rest and Breathe will support clear, open airways while you sleep.

Breathe and Lime

Another beneficial method of utilizing Breathe essential oil blend involves incorporating lime essential oil when you are experiencing wetness in your congestion and respiratory discomfort. By adding lime to your diffuser along with Breathe, you can capitalize on the citrus oil's ability to help break up congestion and promote clearer breathing. This refreshing combination offers a powerful solution for those seeking additional respiratory support.

Breathe Respiratory Drops

Breathe is available in various convenient forms to suit individual preferences. My daughter loves the doTERRA Breathe Respiratory Drops. These lozenges offer a convenient and effective solution for maintaining respiratory wellness. With a blend of Lemon, Peppermint, Cardamom, Eucalyptus, Thyme, and Melissa essential oils, the Breathe Drops are formulated to support clear airways and promote easy breathing. This trusted essential oil blend provides a natural and flavorful way to clean and soothe your airways.

Breathe Vapor Stick

Another convenient option for utilizing the Breathe essential oil blend is the doTERRA Breathe Vapor Stick. This innovative delivery method offers the benefits of the Breathe Respiratory Blend in a convenient stick format, providing quick absorption and smooth application. Whether applied topically or inhaled aromatically, the Breathe Vapor Stick offers a cooling and soothing effect, making it ideal for use anytime, anywhere. Its natural formula ensures that the stick glides effortlessly onto the skin without leaving behind a greasy or sticky residue.

Sinus Steamer Cup

When faced with stubborn congestion that makes your head feel like it’s going to explode, my go-to remedy is creating a sinus steamer or steam cup. This tried-and-true method has been a staple in my home for over a decade, consistently providing relief when needed.

The process is simple yet incredibly effective: start by boiling a cup of water, creating a comforting reservoir of steam. To this hot water, add a single drop each of Tea Tree, Peppermint, Oregano, and Lemon essential oils. Each oil plays a crucial role in addressing congestion and promoting clear breathing. Peppermint, with its invigorating properties, helps to awaken and revitalize the senses, while Tea Tree aids in reducing inflammation and eliminating impurities. Oregano works to clear stubborn congestion, targeting the root cause of discomfort, while Lemon offers its cleansing power to break up congestion and promote respiratory clarity.

With just a drop of each oil, the steam becomes infused with their therapeutic benefits, ready to provide relief. As you inhale the aromatic steam, allow it to penetrate deep into your airways, soothing and opening them with each breath. For an added boost, consider covering your head with a towel to create a makeshift steam tent, intensifying the experience, and maximizing its effectiveness. However, it's essential to exercise caution, particularly with the potent nature of some oils. I've learned from experience to maintain a safe distance, especially when using oils like oregano, which can cause discomfort if too close to the eyes. If you wear contacts, I recommend taking those out before trying the steamer cup. When using this method with children, opt for gentler oils like Lemon, Tea Tree, and Frankincense, ensuring their comfort and safety. The sinus steamer is remarkably effective, swiftly bringing relief as your nose begins to run and everything opens up.

Herbal Oils

Herbal oils offer another avenue for supporting respiratory health. Just as an herbal garden serves a medicinal purpose, these oils can be beneficial when incorporated into diffuser blends or roller bottle blends. While Eucalyptus is a classic choice for respiratory support, sometimes a little extra potency is needed. This is where herbal oils shine. Thyme oil, for instance, is a personal favorite of mine, known for its persistent and supportive properties. Combining it with the Breathe blend can provide added relief, especially when other remedies fall short.

It's important to remember to consult with medical professionals, when necessary, but exploring these additional options can offer valuable alternatives. Marjoram and Rosemary are other herbal oils worth considering, each offering its own unique properties. By experimenting with different combinations, you can find the blend that best suits your body's needs. I recommend starting with Thyme and then trying other options like Rosemary and Marjoram for persistent respiratory discomfort. With these herbal oils in your arsenal, you'll have a diverse range of tools to support your respiratory health. Arborvitae

Another valuable addition to our respiratory support arsenal is Arborvitae essential oil. Unlike herbal oils, Arborvitae comes from the majestic cedar trees of the Pacific Northwest, known as the "Tree of Life" for their longevity and resilience. Extracted from fallen trees, this oil carries the essence of ancient woodlands, boasting a mild yet potent effectiveness in bolstering the immune system.

Despite its powerful properties, Arborvitae is gentle and suitable for children, lacking the spicy heat of some other oils. Its aroma evokes the scent of aged wood, reminiscent of ancient forests and perhaps a hint of sawdust from hardware stores. In our household, Arborvitae holds a special place, often finding its way into our bathwater or diffuser during times of respiratory distress. For targeted support, a few drops of Arborvitae combined with Tea Tree oil and a calming oil like Frankincense or Lavender can offer soothing relief. Whether for immune boosting or respiratory aid, Arborvitae remains a steadfast ally in maintaining overall wellness.

Fir Tree Oils

Another effective option for respiratory support in your diffuser blends is fir tree oils. Varieties such as Douglas Fir, Siberian Fir, and Balsam Fir, all offer beneficial properties for the respiratory system. It's intriguing to note the timing of their popularity, coinciding with the festive season when congestion tends to be prevalent, and the cold weather can leave us feeling less than our best. These fir tree oils evoke the scents of winter and Christmas, making them a perfect choice for diffusing during this time. Personally, I frequently diffuse fir oils in my home, often combining them with complementary scents like Peppermint, Clove, or Frankincense. Not only do these blends create a delightful aroma, but they also provide support for respiratory health. You can read more about tree oils and their benefits here: How to Use Essential Oils from Trees.

Midnight Forest

Another remarkable blend worth mentioning is Midnight Forest. This limited-edition blend offers a unique combination of essential oils that can provide valuable support to your respiratory system, particularly during the winter months when extra care may be needed. In 2020, this blend became an essential part of our daily routine, offering much-needed support to my family, friends, and customers.

Crafted with a thoughtful selection of ingredients, Midnight Forest includes fir tree oils like Siberian Fir, Cypress, and Juniper, along with uplifting notes of Wild Orange and the grounding aroma of Frankincense. Additionally, it features a few lesser-known oils such as Pimento, Cistus, Caraway, and Labdanum, which contribute to its distinctive scent and therapeutic benefits. With its earthy and grounding aroma, Midnight Forest is a valuable addition to any essential oil collection, offering support for respiratory health and a comforting atmosphere during the colder seasons. If you have the opportunity to acquire this blend, I highly recommend adding it to your collection.

Cilantro and OnGuard

When faced with extreme throat irritation that just won't seem to subside, a potent yet simple solution I often turn to involves a shot glass of water combined with specific essential oils. This remedy has proven highly effective in soothing and alleviating discomfort. To prepare, simply fill a shot glass with water and add one drop of Cilantro essential oil along with one drop of OnGuard, our protective blend, renowned for promoting a healthy immune system. It's important to note that these oils are safe for internal use, as indicated by their inclusion of nutrition facts or as verified on doTERRA’s website. While Cilantro may not appeal to everyone's taste buds, it has remarkable benefits. I personally take one of these shots two to three times a day until the irritation dissipates which typically happens within a day or two. Cilantro offers unique properties that target certain strains effectively, complemented by the immune-boosting qualities of OnGuard. For those averse to the taste of cilantro, encapsulating the oils in empty vegetable capsules provides an alternative method of consumption. However, direct application to the throat ensures optimal efficacy.

Additionally, natural honey serves as another excellent option for soothing an irritated throat. Combining a teaspoon of raw organic honey with drops of Lemon and either OnGuard or Clove oil creates a comforting elixir. Clove oil offers a numbing effect that enhances relief. You can also add these oils to warm water, but not hot water. Hot water will degrade the integrity of the oils making them less effective.

Air-X

Air-X is another favorite of mine for respiratory support and has become a companion of mine when traveling. The first thing I do when I get to any hotel is begin diffusing Air-X in my travel diffuser. Air-x was crafted specifically for combating the challenges posed by highly polluted environments, particularly prevalent in urban areas.

My affection for this blend blossomed during the tumultuous times of 2020, when wildfires ravaged the landscapes of Colorado, casting a pall of smoke and discomfort over daily life. Confined indoors due to safety protocols, even the sanctuary of my home was not spared from the acrid scent of burning, leaving my lungs feeling strained and irritated. Diffusing Air-X helped provide much-needed relief. It's crisp, clean aroma is reminiscent of a breath of fresh air. Enhanced with the uplifting notes of Litsea and Tangerine, along with the comforting warmth of Cardamom, Air-X exudes an aura of brightness and vitality.

TriEase

As a final tip for maintaining respiratory health, especially during the changing seasons like spring when seasonal threats ramp up due to blooming flowers, consider incorporating TriEase into your wellness routine. TriEase is a blend of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint essential oils, encapsulated for convenient use. These oils work synergistically to alleviate respiratory discomfort swiftly and effectively. Lavender acts as a natural antihistamine, calming respiratory irritation, while Lemon purifies and cleanses the airways, complemented by the refreshing properties of Peppermint.

You have various options for using TriEase. You can take the softgel capsules as needed, whether once a day, multiple times a day, or occasionally, depending on your respiratory needs. Alternatively, you can create your own capsules by combining one to two drops of each oil in a vegetable capsule. Before TriEase softgels were available, applying a drop of each oil to the bottoms of your feet was a common practice among essential oil users.

Another method is to prepare a shot glass with a drop of each oil diluted in water. This provides a quick and easy solution for respiratory discomfort on-the-go. Additionally, you can create a custom roller bottle blend for convenient application throughout the day. To make a TriEase Roller Blend combine 10 drops each of Lemon, Lavender, and Peppermint and then top with fractionated coconut oil. There is another Breathe Easy roller blend below that you can try as well.

Symphony of the Cells

As a bonus tip, consider exploring the Symphony of the Cells protocols, designed by Boyd Truman. These protocols offer specific guidance for supporting various body systems, including the respiratory system. By following the respiratory protocol outlined in the Symphony of the Cells book, you can learn how to apply essential oils along the spine for an extra boost whenever needed. This protocol incorporates a blend of essential oils such as Frankincense, Tea Tree, OnGuard, AromaTouch, Breathe, Rosemary, Eucalyptus, Melissa, Arborvitae, and Peppermint, chosen for their therapeutic properties.

Utilizing the Symphony of the Cells protocols not only enhances your respiratory health but also empowers you to take your wellness journey to the next level, ensuring you thrive year-round despite seasonal challenges.
