Essential Oils for Better Sleep | Serenity Sleep System Review with doTERRA

Sleep, that elusive and precious commodity, often dances just out of reach on those all-too-familiar nights. Chances are you haven’t made it into adulthood without experiencing those sleepless nights. It can be exasperating to toss and turn in bed while knowing you will be exhausted the next day. Just thinking about those sleepless nights makes me anxious.

doTERRA just released a new sleep system that is designed to support healthy sleep habits and achieve a more restful sleep. In this article I will be covering the products in the sleep system, how to use them, why you need them in your home, and some valuable tips and tricks to make the most of it.

The Importance of Sleep

Sleep is essential for our overall well-being, affecting everything from our hormones to our immune system. Adequate sleep supports the body’s healing and repair process and helps to strengthen the immune system to prevent illness. When we are well rested, we feel more emotionally stable and can manage daily stressors more easily.

Sleep Quality Can Impact:
  • Physical health
  • Mental health
  • Cognitive function
  • Mood regulation
  • Energy levels
  • Weight management
  • Cardiovascular health
  • Physical performance
  • Longevity
  • Creativity
  • Problem-solving
When we prioritize sleep, we are investing in our overall health.

Serenity Sleep Stick With Valerian

This new sleep system is called the Serenity Sleep System. We've had Serenity oil and Serenity Restful softgels for a while, but this is an upgrade as of September 2023. The star of this system is the brand-new addition: the Serenity Sleep Stick with Valerian. This stick combines the Serenity oil with Valerian root, all in a base of coconut oil with a touch of tapioca starch and Elderberry fruit.

What sets this product apart is its ease of use. You can apply it before bed without worrying about a greasy residue. You can put it on the bottoms of your feet, your neck, pulse points, and even your jaw if you're prone to teeth grinding. The stick is versatile and perfect for bedtime routines.

The Serenity Sleep Stick is not just for adults; it's suitable for children as well, with doTERRA recommending it for children one year old and up. The stick formula makes it easier to apply to squirmy babies and toddlers. Older toddlers may even enjoy putting it on themselves, and you don’t have to worry about it getting all over the place.

In my house, we've been using essential oils for a while, especially with my almost 8-year-old daughter, who has struggled with falling asleep. She usually takes a long time to doze off, even after reading stories and trying various calming methods. However, the Serenity Sleep Stick made a noticeable difference. On the very first night, she fell asleep before we finished reading her bedtime stories – something she had never done before. She's been requesting it ever since, and she falls asleep faster every night. The most significant change is that she no longer crawls into bed with me in the middle of the night as she used to, which is a huge improvement.

The Serenity Sleep Stick can be purchased individually or within the Serenity Sleep System.

Serenity Oil

Serenity oil, the second part of the Serenity Sleep System, has been a doTERRA favorite for years. It's a powerful tool for improving sleep, and doTERRA has sold over 8.5 million bottles of Serenity. The blend includes Lavender, giving it a floral scent, a touch of vanilla bean for sweetness, and Vetiver for grounding and calming effects. In the current blend, you'll also find Cedarwood, Coriander, Ylang Ylang, Marjoram, Roman Chamomile, and Sandalwood essential oils, with hints of Tonka Bean, and Vanilla Absolute.

The most obvious way to use Serenity oil is by diffusing it in your bedroom throughout the night; this is going to help you fall asleep and stay asleep. This oil is incredibly versatile, so my best recommendation is to incorporate it into other aspects of your bedtime routine. If you take a bath before bed, consider adding it to your bath water. If you only have time for a shower, use Serenity to make a sugar scrub, or a body oil to use after your shower. You can also use it to make a linen spray that you spray on your pillow before bed. The linen spray would be great to take along when traveling.

The oils used in the Serenity blend have been studied for their impact on sleep. These oils, especially Lavender, have shown to have a calming effect and can improve sleep quality. For some, the effects are immediate, while others may need up to four weeks for the full benefits to kick in, so be patient.  Serenity oil promotes not just longer sleep, but also a deeper, more restorative rest, leaving you feeling refreshed and ready for the day ahead.

Both the Serenity oil and the Serenity stick have a very lavender forward aroma. If you don’t particularly like the aroma of lavender, there are many other options for essential oils to support sleep. Check out my article: Top 10 Essential Oils to Get a Better Night's Sleep.

Serenity Restful Complex Softgels

The final component of the Serenity Sleep System is the Serenity Restful Softgels. This is doTERRA's version of sleeping pills, but without the nasty side effects that are associated with them. These softgels are gentle and effective, designed not to interfere with your body's natural production of melatonin. Which if you didn’t know, many melatonin capsules on the market are synthetic and harmful, decreasing your body’s natural ability to produce melatonin.

The components of the herbal blend used in the softgels are Lavender, L-Theanine and Tart Cherry – along with lemon balm, passionflower, and chamomile. Tart Cherry is new and was added to this blend during the most recent reformulation. Tart Cherry provides many benefits, but as for sleep, it stimulates your body's natural melatonin production.

You can take one to two softgels before sleep. It's recommended to start with one to see what works best for you. Some people have found a combination of one Serenity Restful softgel and one Copaiba capsule to be their ideal sleep aid. Copaiba is known for its relaxing and calming effects. It is great for anxious feelings and calms the nervous system.

It is important to note that Serenity oil and Serenity capsules are different. The Serenity Capsules are an herbal blend and are meant to be taken internally, but the Serenity oil cannot be used internally.

Results of the Serenity Sleep System

Studies conducted by doTERRA have revealed a range of benefits for those using the Serenity Sleep System. Some individuals experienced longer and deeper sleep, while others enjoyed the benefits of enhanced sleep quality. The results showed that those who had a better night's sleep were more active the following day and burned more calories during their daily activities.

Whether you're an adult looking for a better night's sleep or a parent seeking to improve your child's bedtime routine, the Serenity Sleep System can make a significant difference. Quality sleep is essential for our physical and mental health, and the Serenity Sleep System can help you achieve just that.
